I arranged my daughter's 21st birthday at Osaka's. The wonderful Michael Kong made all the arrangements and the dinner was fantastic. Great service. Highly recommended.

I love Osaka! My husband ALWAYS chooses to have dinner here on special occasions, and I'm always happy to go. I love to get the dinner for two - it's pretty pricey, but it's really, really good and they let you take food home if you'll have extras (which you will). The show is the same every time, so it can get old, but who cares? The food is delicious!

*******700th Review******* The decor is very nice, really has an upscale vibe going on here. They did a great job of making their restaurant look good. I love the fact you can order nigiri sushi by a single piece. I love mixing and matching, single piece gives you control of the meal. Sometimes you want more of a certain fish and sometimes less. The sushi is good here overall. I had a chicken teriyaki lunch entree my first visit that was pretty good and would try other options as well based on that. I think they may have improved from the lower ratings from a few years ago. I only have had positive experiences here.

A nice sushi place with a hibachi grill. The waitress was very nice. However felt that the portions were too small and it felt too pricy for the quantity. Taste was just about OK too! It might be just a one-time thing for me!

A pleasant Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar. I enjoyed the decor - there's a fountain as you walk in, and the lighting is subdued but well-placed. There are nine grills, so on a weekend evening there's almost always something going on - a shrimp flying through the air here, or a flash of fire there. Our particular chef was not an expert showman, but he had a great way with children and was friendly. Entrees start around $15, but keep in mind you're also paying for the entertainment. Not a big fan of the dessert - fried bananas. Seems to be a staple for Japanese restaurants in Iowa. Didn't try the sushi.

I actually went to the new location in Iowa City. I have gotten delivery three times and dined in restaurant twice. I have always had a great experience. The service was great, the location is central downtown, everything came out fine and quickly. Delivery timing, it depends on the day and time. Very fresh and ample portions of fish, which is a huge plus for me. I get sushi and sashimi for the fish after all. Their salad dressing on the side salad is very unique and tasty. The price for the quality is very fair. I judge pretty hard because I'm from the east coast, near water and such, but so far in Iowa and Coralville, this is my favorite sushi place. The tempura is a little heavy (maybe too low temp on the oil), but not distractingly so.

Went to the Cedar Rapids location with my dad and family for Father's Day, we are what you would call "regulars". Usually we get this blonde lady, she's super nice, very personable. Tonight however, we got a man named Jacob. First words to come out of his mouth were EXTREMELY rude, seriously Jacob? Father's Day??? Took a deep breath and kinda brushed it off. Then my dad asked for a refill, diet Pepsi, waiter gave us root beer, no problem. Went to the counter to ask for the right thing (very nicely might I add, my dad is the one of the nicest people you could ever meet) and he argued with my dad and kind of blew up in his face. Very disappointed with the service. But the food was good as usual.

We absolutely love this place, the owner is wonderful. Have noticed some of the staff isn't up to par. We've never tried the grill side we always get sushi. Love that most of the sauces are homemade.

Arrived with coworkers, we had the norm sushi to start out with, salmon, yellow tail , some California rolls, all nice and tasty, good sake, then the fun part started, chef walks in starts his show and Bam! Blades fly out knock 2 glasses of water, one gets me, chef does apologize, and show goes on but, sorry have to drop a point for carelessness, I had the Ribeye, nicely cooked and tasty, the cooked rice was meh, too much egg overcooked, shrimp appetizers were yummy, not bad seafood for mid America area, will come back again if in the area.

Stick to the grill. Pass on the sushi. I think the food and the chefs at the Grill are really good. The place is always clean and the staff is friendly. The sushi is about the worst I've had in a long time. My spicy tuna roll seems like canned tuna mixed with some flavored ingredients. Nobody liked the sushi enough to go for a second piece.

I'm writing this review to update the delivery option to "no". Osaka does not deliver. Yelp doesn't allow updating business options ("survey questions") without writing a review. I have not eaten at Osaka in about 3 years.

I usually really love Osaka, however this evening was one of the worst experiences that I have had. Our server basically forgot about our table and a few people including myself had to go get our own water while in the middle of our meal. I ordered sushi and so did another person at our table who I was not with. The server brought our sushi out on the same platter and asked if we wanted to share the plate with the table. I asked the server if she could put my sushi on its own plate. She came back after scraping off onto a regular dinner plate. After the meal I sat at the bar with my dining companion and asked to speak with a manager about the issue and a manager never came to speak with us. We ended up waiting for 30 minutes to speak with someone. Not the best experience from Osaka. I still love the food but the service tonight was less than their best.

Our Osaka experience was almost perfect! The food was perfect........I had the tuna and steak. Our chef was the best! I had one complaint about our server/manager (see my less than one star rating review). I'm not sure if yelp will let me give a 5 star rating and then follow up with a less than one star rating on the same restaurant but here it goes. As much as I love Osaka and as much as I hate to give them a bad rating, our waitress/manager gave us HORRIBLE service. When we brought up the fact that her service was less than stellar, she said she did not treat us that way. It was very disappointing. We will still go back to Osaka because we love the place, but if you walk in and your server's name is Sarah, you should just leave and come back later. Requesting a new waitress through the manager will not work because she is the manager. Maybe at some point they will figure it out.

This place is flat out delicious. I had never been to a Japanese steak house before, and I was really impressed to find this gem smack in the middle of Iowa (of all places!!). The food is very flavorful and the experience is fun as well. My friend and I got a table with a mix of an older couple and a family. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, myself included. So if you're looking for a great restaurant in the CR-IC area, I highly suggest you check this place out! I highly recommend the shrimp!

Great service, prices reasonable, creative nightly specials (excellent wine deals on Wednesdays), and great atmosphere.

Ouch. Serious downgrade, albeit deserved. We had made a reservation which they did not track, therefore having to wait nearly 30 minutes. Our server was obnoxious in that he was constantly/desperately trying to upsell everything. And I mean everything. I ordered a vodka tonic, server suggested Gray Goose. The BF ordered a steak entree, server suggested a combo dinner with steak. Just things like that....but all the time. Everything that came out of our mouth he attempted to upsell, even though all 4 of us ordered a couple of drinks, and an entree. It just got downright uncomfortable after a while. The separate group of ladies who joined us at the table ordered appetizers that came as the meal was getting served, and their sushi rolls came at the end of the meal. In my opinion, our server should be more concerned with providing decent service than trying to get every last dollar our table was willing to spend. Don't worry, he attempted plenty of upsells with them as well. 3 out the 4 meals we ordered were over-cooked. Steaks ordered medium rare and medium came out well done. My sushi grade tuna was served medium well. Tuna doesn't even taste good at that point because it is so dry. Ick. I was expecting more flavor in the rice and vegetables, too. But everything tasted the same aka bland. The guys ordered a couple beers, which happened to be the drink special that night...they were charged full price. Any of these issues on their own wouldn't have been that bothersome. The fact that all of this happened in a single visit really sucked and unfortunately given my first experience here was sub-par, I have no issue going elsewhere in the future.

Great food but a little pricey for what you get. Last time we were there the waitress was pretty rude so if you go be sure to wear your big boy pants!

Osaka is the place I go in Cedar Rapids when I want really good food and really good service. We were blown away by the service. We were greeted like family upon entering and the host always seems to recognize us when we go back. The sushi is UNBELIEVABLY delicious. It's so good that once I tried it, it was hard to ever go back to the grill menu. In either case, you are in for a treat. One time, however, I went all out and ordered lobster and scallops on the grill....it wasn't so good (go figure in Iowa). Stick to the beef, salmon, and chicken....it is easier on the pocketbook and it tastes much better. You can go for lunch if you would prefer to save some dough because although the portions are slightly smaller for lunch, you still get more than enough to eat. Like I said though, the sushi is where its at. Although it can get a little pricey, it is worth it!!

My wife and I have eaten at Osaka many times. Every time we have eaten there we have gone for the Sushi. Each time we go we are very pleased at the level of service and the friendly atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone.
